Dangling Modifier

DANGLING MODIFIER:

যখন কোনো modifier সঠিক subject কে modify না করে অন্য কোনো কিছুকে modify করে তখন তাকে Dangling Modifier/ Illogical Modifier/ Misplaced Modifier বলে। প্রশ্নে  Dangling modifier এর ক্ষেত্রে সাধারণত simple sentence এর দুইটি অংশ থাকে যা কমা (,) দ্বারা আলাদা করা থাকে। প্রথম অংশটি gerund/infinitive/ =participle/adjective phrase/reduced adjective clause/Having (been) +V3/ preposition + verb + ing expression with like or unlike দ্বারা শুরু হয়ে থাকে কিন্তু প্রথম অংশে subject থাকে না এবং প্রথম অংশের এই লুকায়িত বা অনুল্লেখিত subject টিকেই দ্বিতীয় অংশের subject হিসেবে সঠিকভাবে উপস্থাপন করতে হবে।

• Incorrect: Hearing the good news, happy I was           Correct: I was happy.

■ দ্বিতীয় অংশের subject টি প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে প্রয়োজনে দ্বিতীয় অংশটি passive করে লিখতে হবে । প্রথম অংশের অনুল্লেখিত subject টি ব্যক্তিবাচক হলে পরের অংশটি ব্যক্তিবাচক subject দ্বারা আরম্ভ হবে।

• Incorrect: While going to class, a dog bit me.         Correct: I was bitten by a dog.

■ প্রথম অংশের subject টি বস্তুবাচক হলে পরের অংশ বস্তুবাচক subject দ্বারা আরম্ভ হবে ।

• Incorrect: Flying out the window, he grabbed the papers.      Correct: the papers were grabbed by him.

■ তবে যখন এ নিয়মে Simple sentence এ সঠিক অর্থ আসে না তখন Complex sentence এ লিখতে হবে।

• Incorrect: Crossing the street, a car almost struck us.            Correct: As we crossed the street, _________

আরো ভালোভাবে বোঝার জন্য আরো কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ উদাহরণ উপস্থাপন করা হলো:

ভূল     : Completing the physical examination, the tonsils were found to be diseased.

সঠিক  : When the physical examination was completed, the tonsils were found to be diseased.

ভূল      : Having stolen the money, the police search the thief.

সঠিক  : Having stolen the money, the thief was searched by the police.

ভূল      : After painting the car, it was given to the man's wife by the man.

সঠিক  : After painting the car, the man gave it to his wife.

ভূল     : Unlike most birds, feathers are not found on the heads and necks of vultures.

সঠিক  : Unlike most birds, vultures do not have feathers on their heads and necks.

ভূল     : Meticulous and punctual, David's work ethic is admirable.

সঠিক : Meticulous and punctual, David has an admirable work ethic.

ভূল    : Having been thrown in the air, the dog caught the stick.

সঠিক : When the stick was thrown in the air, the dog caught it.

ভূল    : Before singing the school song, a poem was recited.

সঠিক : Before singing the school song, the students recited a poem.

ভূল    : I saw a dead cow walking in the field.

সঠিক : While walking in the field/ While I was walking in the field, I saw a dead cow.

ভূল    :Being thoroughly dissatisfied with the picture, it was hidden in the closet.

সঠিক : Being thoroughly dissatisfied with the picture, John hid it in the closet.

ভূল     : Seeing the advancing army, all valuables were hidden under the stairwall.

সঠিক : Seeing the advancing army, the family hid the valuables under the stairwall.
